Famous Burlesque Shows Throughout History
In the beginning burlesque was a literary, dramatic or musical work with caricature, parody and theatrical extravaganza, as presented in England during the Victorian era in the late 17th century.
Burlesque imitated several styles and combined imitations of popular works and grew in popularity until it became the specialty of many London theatres. After burlesque went out of fashion in England at the end of the 19th century, a new American style of burlesque with an increasing focus on female nudity became popular.
American burlesque shows came in a variety show format that was popular up until the 1940s. American burlesque was performed in cabarets and clubs and usually featured comedy acts along with female striptease.
The early New York burlesque shows consisted of comic acts, chorus lines, acrobats and exotic dancers. The strippers gradually replaced all the other singing and dancing acts and by the early 20th century there were two complete national circuits of burlesque shows. The early star strippers included some big names like Sally Rand, Gypsy Rose Lee, and Tempest Storm. The enforcement of prohibition laws put the burlesque houses out of business by the early 1940s, and by the 1970s, with nudity commonplace in theatres, burlesque finally died out in the United States.
Fast forward to today however, and you'll find that there has been a revival of burlesque as a new generation has become nostalgic for the spectacle and glamour of the classic American burlesque in the good old days. Here at Burlesque.com we know that Burlesque is gaining popularity not only because it's a lot of fun, but also because the fashions and styles of the burlesque era are enjoying a comeback as well. Even though burlesque dancing has nearly developed a cult following in some circles, it is important to remember that burlesque dancing does not necessarily equal stripping and that some of the best burlesque dancers usually remove no more clothing than a single glove or a stocking.
Today there are two main types of burlesque routines. The first type includes the traditional solo-striptease to music and the second type is basically a chorus dance performed in lingerie or a petticoat and corset. Burlesque also requires appropriate music, usually something like a big band sound or 1940's show music, but today burlesque is more open to interpretation and can performed with just about any kind of music you want.
Here at Burlesque.com we encourage all styles of dancing and music just as long as it is subtle and provocative. Remember that good burlesque is not really about stripping, it is more about being sexy and seductive with class and elegance.
