Festivals are Shining a Spotlight on Talented Tampa Performers
by Burlesque.com
?Tampa Bay Online reports that Florida's burlesque community is finally getting their day in the sun thanks to the Suncoast Burlesque Festival in St. Pete Beach. The festival, which is January 19th through the 22nd, will feature competitions and workshops teaching how to develop a persona and achieve the glamorous burlesque look.
The area is home to many extremely talented burlesque dance troupes including Hip Expressions in St. Petersburg and Le Teaze Burlesque of Tampa. Both Hip Expressions and Le Teaze consist of women from many walks of life. There are performers like Cherry Vonn Topp who formerly worked as an aerialist at Walt Disney World and Luna Love who spends her days working as a consultant. Despite their differences, they all share a love for performing and celebrating their femininity.
Tampa area performers are hopeful that now is the time that their artistry will become less underground and more mainstream. There is another festival in March that seems to suggest that their wish is coming true. The second festival is called The American Pin-Up Burlesque Fest. It is being hosted by American Pin-Up Magazine. The international publication's photographer, Richard Strawn, calls it a "classy and tasteful event" that will also be "fun for the audiences."
The article also briefly talks about the history of burlesque and its vaudeville roots. It suggests that the 2010 film "Burlesque" may be the cause of rising interest. What ever the reason may be, if these two festivals are as successful as everyone hopes that they will be, there no limit to how large the Tampa area burlesque community can become.
